Besides, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asked PM Narendra Modi to raise two major issues with the US President Donald Trump during his talks with him: he can take up tariff hikes on Indian exports and treatment of Indians in the US. Kharge said these are issues of economic and humanitarian importance to India, forcing them to be addressed urgently.

Kharge, in a post on X, said, “A 25% tariff on aluminium and steel imports with “no exemptions, no exceptions” for any country, has serious repercussions for India’s manufacturing.

We must build closer trade ties for both countries with mutually beneficial framework, given that the US is one of our biggest trading partner.” Kharge wrote.

Last week, President Trump informed the world that he increased the tariffs on steel and aluminium imports for what he referred to as unfair trade practices and global dumping. However, in a press note issued by the White House, the decision was justified to protect the American industries. The announcement, however, drew strong reactions from around the world, including from the European Union, which vowed to respond with countermeasures; from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called the tariffs ‘entirely unjustifiable’ and vowed a firm response; and from Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel, who spoke with Trump on Monday.

Kharge further lamented what he termed as the ‘traumatic deportation’ of Indian immigrants to the US, where many deportees were apparently ‘handcuffed, with legs chained’, an issue that has caused uproar in the Indian community. PM Modi should intervene and see if the issue can be resolved by resolution, he added, for dignified treatment of Indian nationals who are deported.
