The central government has been called out by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) recently filed chargesheet in the National Herald case, where senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi figure in the chargesheet. At a meeting with the party’s general secretaries, Kharge alleged the move was politically motivated and meant to intimidate Congress leadership.

Kharge said: “We are not going to be scared, the chargesheet and attachment of properties alleged to have been used by the National Herald in the political platform of the BJP, is part of selective political vendetta.” He also added that the BJP government is using the ED as an agency to stifle the voice of opposition and slander our top leaders ahead of crucial elections.

On April 9, the ED filed the chargesheet in the National Herald money laundering case and made Sonia Gandhi accused no 1 and Rahul Gandhi accused no 2. The main issue in the case is supposed to be that the Alishan Group, which runs the National Herald newspaper, was involved in financial irregularities in its operation.

Judge Vishal Gogne, who is hearing the case, reviewed the chargesheet and has fixed April 25, 2025, to take cognisance of the ED’s findings.

The issue between Congress and the BJP has been this long-pending National Herald case, with the former alleging it is being hit at wrongly. Kharge, however, insisted Congress would keep fighting its political battle and ‘not succumb to tactics of harassment’.

‘This is only an attempt to divert the public’s attention towards real issues of the nation,’ Kharge said, gathering party leaders to protest a ‘deliberate attack on democracy and dissent.’
