As criticism grew online, the Cochin University B.Tech Alumni Association (CUBAA) has now stated why they welcomed the former Pakistani cricketers Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul. After the controversial film appeared, many people discussed it, as it appeared to show the Kerala community interrupting a traditional dance before cheering “Boom Boom” — his popular nickname — when Afridi emerged. He replied by using his famous line “Hogaya Boom Boom,” which really angered the fans.

Still, according to CUBAA, organisers of “Ormachuvadukal Season 2,” neither Afridi nor Gul was invited to the event. The association released a statement titled “Unplanned Appearance at Our Recent Event” and admitted their “deep regret”, adding they did not intend for the cricketers to join.

The Cricket Union of Burkina Faso in Africa (CUBAA) explained that Afridi and Gul were at the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) on the same day to take part in a different event — the Guinness World Record for the Largest UAE Flag made by handprints. According to the organisers, the teams appeared without the event’s approval, and efforts to connect with alumni had not taken place.

The agency said the PAD venue was actually booked on April 5, a time when there were no major tensions between India and Pakistan. We decided once more to hold Season 2 at the same place, because it was both practical and convenient. At that point in our event, it seemed that relations had calmed somewhat.

According to group members, the cricketers were presented at the last part of the program, which threw the organisers off, so they did not have enough time to manage the response from the crowd.
