Kerala: Since Sunday morning, at least 25 people have died in Kerala as a result of heavy rains that triggered landslides in the districts of Idukki and Kottayam. In Kottayam, 14 people were found dead and 9 in Idukki. All 12 bodies that were reported missing in Kottayam have been found.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a high-level meeting to boost rescue efforts and stated that all means would be used to evacuate people stranded in areas flooded by heavy rain in the state, including Kottayam. The Army, Navy, and Air Force have stepped in to assist the civil administration in dealing with the situation, at the request of the state government. The National Disaster Response Force has decided to send 11 teams to the scene. So far, 33 people have been rescued, including 8 women and 7 children.
Rainstorms have also been reported in northwest India, south peninsular India, and East India. In Tamil Nadu, 3 people were killed yesterday as a result of heavy rains. The India Meteorological Department expects rain to fall in northwest India beginning Monday, while rainfall began to fall in much of south India yesterday. There have been no new reports of flooding.
