Karnataka: State police seized up to 40 tonnes of bones and horns from cows, buffaloes and other animals piled into three trucks on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway and three people got arrested, police said on Friday.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that those arrested were the drivers of trucks who ferried the load from Gownipalli village in Bagepalli taluk in Hyderabad. Those arrested were identified as Sadakath Ali, Toufiq and Basheer Ansari. The horns and bones are ground into powder and mixed with fodder. Police are looking for the owners of the vehicles and the person who ordered them.

All the accused have been taken into judicial custody. Police suspect an illegal cow slaughter mafia behind the crime and have initiated a stringent probe.

Recently, Bajrang Dal activists stopped a truck carrying 26 cattle, including 7 buffaloes and 19 cows, near Kyasamballi in the Kolar district. The animals were also illegally transported from Andhra Pradesh,  reported police during the investigation.
