Justice Surya Kant was formally sworn-in on Monday as the 53 rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding Justice BR Gavai who retired a day before. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at a short but respectable ceremony in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Some of the key leaders present at the event included the vice president of the CP Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and this was a significant occasion in the Indian judiciary.
During his time in the Supreme Court Justice Kant has been instrumental in a number of landmark constitutional cases. He served on benches which passed verdicts on the abrogation of the Article 370, revision of Bihar electoral roles and the Pegasus spyware scandals, which indicated his excellent judicial skills and adherence to constitutional values.
Justice Surya Kant was born on 10 th February, 1962 in a middle-income family in Hisar, Haryana, but his life is a remarkable story of hard work and perseverance. He has been a lawyer in a small town and has worked his way to the top to become the head judge of the country and his career has been characterized by hard work and his intellectuality. In the previous reports he reported earning his Masters in Law in the Kurukshetra University in 2011 and topped his class.
Justice Kant assumed office with the Supreme Court in October 5, 2018 and has served as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court before and has already passed some notable verdicts in his tenure at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Kant will become CJI 15 months, vacating office on February 9, 2027, when he becomes 65, the retirement age. Other prominent interventions included pushing the Election Commission to reveal information regarding the 65 lakh voters who had not been included in the draft electoral rolls of Bihar and also hearing petitions contested over the Special Intensive Revision that was initiated in the state.
