On Tuesday, the Union government cleared the name of Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, as a judge who will be swearing in the Supreme Court of India. The announcement came after President Droupadi Murmu’s assent to the recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium last week. The appointment meets one of two existing vacancies in the country’s top court and increases the presence of the Delhi High Court in the Supreme Court.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the development on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “The President of India under the Constitution of India in the exercise of the powers conferred on him is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India with the consultation with Chief Justice of India.”
Justice Manmohan’s nomination was mooted for the post by the apex court’s collegium on November 28. The collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and comprising Justices Bhushan R Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and Abhay S Oka Tallied, the advocates’ seniority, merit and integrity of the roster system had to balance representation from the Delhi High Court. The resolution observed that the Supreme Court currently has only one judge from the Delhi High Court, Chief Justice Khanna, while Justices S Ravindra Bhat, Sanjay Kishan Kaul & Hima Kohli are retired. Traditionally, the Delhi High Court annually provides 3 to 4 judges to the Supreme Court; therefore, the appointment of Justice Manmohan has put this tradition on the right track.
