Justice K. Vinod Chandran was inducted as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India today morning. He was given the oath of office by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Sanjiv Khanna. Justice Chandran, who has earlier worked for Patna High Court as Chief Justice, has been appointed for one of the two S C vacancies. This appointment will help Kerala continue to be represented on the bench after Justice C.T. Ravikumar’s retirement earlier this month.

Justice Chandran was officially recommended for the post by the Supreme Court collegium, and the union government made it official on January 13. The collegium comprising CJI Khanna and Justices Bhushan R Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and Abhay S Oka stressed the issues of vacancies more so in the backdrop of no representation of the State of Kerala on the bench after the retirement of Justice Ravikumar on January 5.

Taking to social media, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal released a statement over the situation affirming the appointment of Justice Chandran; however, he also underscored that the President had used Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India and in consultation with the Chief Justice of India to make the appointments. ”It is hereby notified that in exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, Chief Justice, Patna High Court, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” said Meghwal.

Justice Chandran’s appointment is noteworthy in a way more than the fact that it fills the seat left by Justice Ravikumar, for it underscored further that Kerala’s representation in the apex court remains an enduring fixture. With this important appointment, the Supreme Court is more prepared to meet the increasing caseload before it.
