To mark a historic period of women empowerment, the Supreme Court collegium has included 3 women in the list of rank elevation to the higher court. Amongst them, Justice B V Nagarathna has been on the top priority list to be the first woman chief justice of India. Currently, she is working as a judge in Karnataka high court.
Two other women judges are also present in the list of recommendations by the SC collegium. Justice Bela Trivedi and Justice Hima Kohli are the other two judges in line for rank elevation in the highest court of the country. The collegium is led by the chief justice of Supreme Court N V Ramana who recommended the names of 9 judges for the rank elevation.
Nagarathna was appointed as an additional judge in the Karnataka HC in the year 2008. But 2 years later she was appointed as a permanent judge with the court. Her appointment as the first woman chief justice of India would be historic. She is following her father, E S Venkataramiah’s footsteps who was also chief justice of the Supreme Court from June to Dec 1989. It’s indeed the period of women’s empowerment!
