Junior doctors in West Bengal announced a ‘total cease work’ to press the Mamta Banerjee government on various demands following the Supreme Court hearing on Monday. The decision was taken after an eight-hour meeting in which the doctors placed 10 demands, including safety assurance and security at all medical establishments, improving health infrastructure, and putting an end to the threat culture and politics in hospitals.
“We are compelled to return to a full cease work starting from today. Unless we receive clear action from the government on safety, patient services, and the politics of fear, we will have no choice but to continue our full strike,” the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front said in a statement.
The junior doctors had on September 21 rejoined their duties partially at government hospitals after a 42-day protest. They were on a cease work agitation to protest against the rape-murder of an on-duty woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
Earlier on Sunday, the torch march was organised by the West Bengal Junio Doctors’ Front- an umbrella group representing medics from various medical college hospitals in the state rallies also highlighted the need to end a threat culture in medical colleges where students reportedly face intimidation.
