Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Friday asked Parliamentarians to go for routine health checkups as concerns mount over rising levels of obesity and lifestyle diseases among MPs and leading players in the House. During the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Nadda emphasized the need to detect the disease early and prevent it by getting regular medical checkups.
Speaking at the launch of the Global Action Plan for Safe Diagnosis for NCDs, the minister expressed alarm on the growing rates of NCDs in India and stated that according to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the proportion of NCDs increased from 37 percent to 61.8 percent in the period from 1990 to 2016. He blamed the sharp rise on the change in lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, and lack of physical activity.
JP Nadda said that it is a serious concern that is to be addressed collectively. “lifestyle-related diseases is straightforward and our daily routines and eating patterns. It is aware it is to be prevented, and the first step is for us to lead by example.”
He also mentioned some government initiatives to promote better living through the Ayushman Arogya Mandir program. This initiative involves targeting individuals under 30 years of age for the screening of health concerns so as to start early and promote lifestyle changes.
Nadda called upon the MPs to prioritize their health and encourage people in the same direction. He emphasized: “Many within us are overweight and require for all Members of Parliament to have health check-ups on at least once a year.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, his support also for the minister’s suggestion, urged parliamentarians to take the regular health screening seriously and that they lead by example for their public. The two leaders said healthier lawmakers would be better able to work for the country’s progress.
