Jammu and Kashmir Police, on Saturday, conducted a huge crackdown on the network of terrorists in the Kishtwar district, searching 26 residential houses. The events included raids on the homes of the most senior operative in the terror organisation, Hizbul Mujahideen, namely Mohammad Amin Bhat alias Jehangir Saroori.

As officials cited, the synchronised raids included mainly the residential places of terrorists already deployed to fight in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). It is said these people are engaged in smuggling guns and bullets across the border, which are used to support terrorist acts in the area. The goal was to break the logistical and support chains that supply such cross-border militant movements.

The police teams were stationed at different areas of Kishtwar district, and the operation took place at every site at the same time, so that the impact was more, and there was less probability of an escape and destruction of evidence. The raids are in direct succession of other such activities conducted a day before in the adjoining district of Doda where 15 houses were searched as part of the ongoing counter-terrorist activity.

Among the most important targets, Mohammad Amin Bhat is regarded as the longest-living Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist. He went to the banned group in the 1990s and, since then, has been able to elude arrest and has continued to have an influence within the militant circles. His exploits have, over a long time, been connected with planning and enabling terror activities in the region.

The officials asserted that the operation is more of a bigger plan aimed at rooting out the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, not only by hunting down the active militants but also their support systems, such as those that deal with their monetary requirements and logistical support. The raids have been conducted at high security levels with the intention of collecting the most important evidence, confiscating illegal assets and detecting persons supporting terrorist movements across the border.

More information about recoveries/arrests will come with the investigation.
