The candidate of Janata Dal (United) representing Mokama constituency, Anant Singh has issued his first public statement after being arrested in the alleged murder of Dularchand Yadav, a campaign worker of the Jan Suraaj candidate, Piyush Priyadarshi. The incident is preceding the Bihar assembly elections by a narrow margin, and this is giving political fire to an already volatile battle at Mokama.

Early in the morning of Sunday, November 2, Anant Singh was captured in one of the video messages he posted on Facebook when he was accompanied by police officers. In the posting he wrote, “Satyamev Jayate! I am absolutely confident in Mokama people! That is why now people of Mokama are going to fight this election!” This message seemed to portray an air of confidence and resistance which means that he is not going to give up his political struggle despite the legal issues that he is in trouble with.

Police officials claim that Anant Singh was arrested in the end of the night, late on Saturday, after a large scale operation of nearly 150 members of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The raids were conducted in his suspected hideouts in Barh and Mokama which were in the rural districts within the Patna district. After he was arrested, Singh was taken to the state capital where he was questioned about his involvement in the murder case.

The case of the murder of Dularchand Yadav has created a lot of political rift within the state of Bihar with the opposition side demanding a fair probe into the case and the JD(U) side arguing that the arrest of Singh is a due process. Anant Singh himself, a strongman leader in Mokama, has had a tainted political career that has been characterized by several criminal accusations and a hard-core following, who have remained loyal to him.

The arrest of Singh will bring a significant effect to the politics in Mokama as the election campaign heats up, establishing the scene of a hotly contested region.
