Jalandhar, Punjab: On Monday morning, 2 girls were struck by a vehicle being driven by a police officer. While one of the girls who were standing by the roadside died on the spot, other sustained critical injuries. Amrit Pal Singh, a Punjab Police inspector, who was driving the vehicle with the Hoshiarpur number has been taken into custody and stationed at Harike Pattan.
Navjot Kaur, who worked at a nearby car dealership, has been identified as the victim. She and her friend were standing on the side of the road when the vehicle mowed them down. The event occurred on the Jalandhar-Phagwara route in Dhanewali village. Locals then stopped vehicles and blocked the highway, resulting in traffic gridlock. Jalandhar Cantt was also shut down, causing massive traffic jams. On the highway, a group of protesters sat on a dharna protesting the incident.
A white Brezza car is seen mowing down the two girls on CCTV footage. When the girls saw the car approaching, they took a step back, but the car still slammed into them. The vehicle was being driven by police inspector Amrit Pal Singh, who was alone in the car, and he has been arrested, according to ADCP 1 Jalandhar Suhail Mir. Jalandhar Police Commissioner Naunihal Singh, speaking about the massive traffic congestion, said, “Traffic jams were formed on the highway as a result of citizens halting traffic following the incident. We’re looking into that right now.”
