Jalandhar-based businessman Nitin Kohli made a key political move on Thursday by officially joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Senior leader Manish Sisodia, who looks after the Punjab affairs of the AAP, was there to welcome Kohli at a ceremony in Jalandhar.
After being inducted, Nitin Kohli was made the halqa in-charge of Jalandhar Central Assembly, taking over from current MLA Raman Arora. Arora’s arrest by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau last week for corruption is the reason for his removal. It is alleged that Arora took part in corrupt activities, working together with an official of the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation.
During the press meet, Sisodia said he was saddened by Arora’s behaviour and called it a breach of the public’s trust. “It is regrettable that a member of our party, voted into office by the people in 2022, has disappointed them with what they’ve done. Corruption is not tolerated by the Aam Aadmi Party, no matter who the person is,” said Sisodia. He repeated that the current Punjab government under Bhagwant Mann will not tolerate any corruption and anyone caught doing wrong will be punished.
As soon as the government learned that Arora was involved in corruption, it took strong steps. It didn’t stop us that he came from within our own political party. It is most important to be accountable to the people of Punjab, Sisodia said.
He also noted that the Punjab Police and the Vigilance Bureau have received full authority to enforce laws against corruption. At the event, Punjab AAP president and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora pointed out that the party is working together to promote clean governance.
