External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has given an insight on how the ceasefire between India and Pakistan came about after the two countries engaged in violent military actions against each other following a terror attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir in April, this year. In the interview with Newsweek in NY Jaishankar tried to dismiss the fact that the U.S. president Donald Trump managed to negotiate a ceasefire between the two countries.
Describing the military action of India as the military reaction to it as known as Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar noted that the situation occurred under real-time approach and was not carried out by any external influence. Describing his first-hand experience, the minister said he was present on the night of May 9 one of the most important phone calls between the U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jaishankar said that Vance told Modi that a very massive attack could be planned by Pakistan.
Even though the warning was issued, Jaishankar reiterated that India was not succumbing to intimidations. The Pakistanis were threatening to do something and this was something that was sweeping over the Prime Minister like rain, he said. Quite to the contrary, he pointed out that we would have a reaction. The same night, an extensive Pakistan offensive took place against which the Indian forces responded very effectively and promptly.
The next morning on May 10, Jaishankar talked with the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who told him that of late Pakistan was open to proposition of dialogue. Pakistan, the Director General of Military Operations, major general Kashif Abdullah, appealed directly to his Indian counterpart, Lt. general Rajiv Ghai, seeking a cease fire by the afternoon.
Jaishankar categorically rejected the statement of Trump in favor of using trade in order to bring the ceasefire, explaining that there was no connection between diplomacy and trade in this case. Its trade ministers do what they should do, negotiate trade agreements, not arrange cease fires, he added.
