New Delhi: India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who has been criticised for losing Indian territories to China, is the subject of a recent interview with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar with a news agency. Chairman Jaishankar responded to the Opposition’s accusations of China building the “model village” in Arunachal Pradesh near Ladakh and intruding into the land areas in the east of this country by providing historical context to the country’s territorial dispute.
Jaishankar assured delegates that the Chinese are constructing model villages, including Longju village, which is contested. “Going through the Indian Parliamentary records or, for that matter any book stating on the border problem between China and us, it was China that captured Longju in 1959 which was as Nehru was the Prime Minister, Nehru himself admitted in the Parliament that it was beyond his control. After that, the Chinese again captured it entirely in 1962 during the war,” Jaishankar explained.
Further, he discussed the disagreement of the Opposition that the bridge at the northern side of Pangong Tso Lake China is being built. In this regard, Jaishankar indicated that the information the Chinese gave stopped near Khurnak Fort. This area was in the possession of Chinese troops in 1958, and this segment of Chola was captured, thanks to the war of 1962.
In addition, Jaishankar addressed the Shaksgam Valley case, a matter related to India’s making in the Siachen Valley. It was Chaudhry on whom Rajagopalachari blamed the loss of the power play he had is because of Nehru’s decision made that year. He brought Shaksgam valley under the control of Pakistani-occupied Kashmir by accepting a truce and not insisting on continuing the attack on Pakistan. In 1963, the foreign minister of Pakistan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, sold 5,180 sq km of this territory to China. This “framing” background is critical when the current government is being criticized about
Jaishankar argues that Rahul Gandhi, who is part of the Congress party, is also indirectly faulted for displaying apologetic behaviour regarding China.
