New Delhi: Parliament was in session on Friday, and during the Rajya Sabha session, a precarious situation arose that compelled the opposition to stage a walkout. This came after the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and SP’s Jaya Bachchan lost their cool and had a tussle for the second successive day.
The controversy started when the Congress lawmakers sought the chair to initiate a ruling on the matter of their complaint against BJP MP Ghansyam Tiwari. The complaint was about the comment made by Tiwari about Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition. Earlier, Jagdeep Dhankhar had settled the matter in his chambers, saying that Tiwari had even complimented Kharge for his speech. However, after passing this resolution, Kharge, with the help of the Congress party, tried to seek clarification in the house, further provoking the situation.
In the center of the debate, the latter was offended by the remarks of the former concerning the tone. The sentiment introduced towards Dhankhar consisted of Bachchan pointing out that he was rude in his words. However, she appreciates his profession as an artist in acting well aware of body language. Dhankhar reacted angrily and defended himself by telling the lady that even if she is famous and has the freedom to be vulgar, she cannot do that in the House. He underlined that every member, irrespective of their origin, should adhere to the rules and etiquette of the parliaments.
As a result of the transition, the Opposition boycotted the session with Dhankhar, stating that it was actually disrespecting the chair and democratic values. He also opined that there was a plot to blacklist the country and its electoral processes.
In response, the House Leader, JP Nadda, moved a resolution in the house to condemn the opposition’s conduct. Another negative sentiment came from former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, whose party, BJP, is in an alliance. After the sedate scene for the first time in Parliament, Bachchan told the press that she was unhappy with the tenor of Dhankhar. She specifically did not like being interrupted when Kharge was on the floor and the manner in which the chair brushed him off. Bachchan pressed for an apology, saying she, being a senior parliamentarian, must be respected and the current demeaneur of the house was most unpleasant.
