New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday waded into the hijab row, saying it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear and she can wear a “bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab”.

Taking to her Twitter handle Congress High Command extended support to those fighting for Hijab in Karnataka. Whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab, it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear. This right is guaranteed by the Indian constitution. Stop harassing women. #ladkihoonladsaktihoon,” Priyanka tweeted.

Objection to Hijab was first seen in January after a group of students in the govt colleges in Karnataka were barred from attending classes. The issue has now spiralled into a political war, as the ruling party stood strongly in support of uniform-related rules being enforced by educational institutions, calling the headscarf, a religious symbol, while the Opposition Congress has come out in support of Muslim girls.

#ladkihooladaaktihoon has been the political slogan for the Congress which speaks to stand in solidarity with girls across the country. This has been the war cry in the poll-bound state which commences Assembly elections tomorrow. The party has focused on women rights and empowerment as one of the key factors in its manifesto.
