The Israeli ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, on Tuesday strongly refuted the allegation by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra that Israel is carrying out genocide in Palestine as she presented her own series of statistics and arguments.
Priyanka Gandhi had earlier written on X that “The Israeli state is committing genocide”, claiming that there were over 60,000 people killed in Gaza, and 18,430 of them were children. She argued that hundreds of people starved to death, most of whom are children, and she alleged that Israel threatened to starve millions. She also condemned the Indian government, saying that it was “a crime in itself” to allow Israel to get away with the destruction, and the Indian government was standing mute as Israel wreaked havoc on the people of Palestine.
The reply of Ambassador Azar was written. What is really disgraceful is your lying. Israel murdered 25,000 terrorists of Hamas.” His reasoning was that Hamas employed inhumane methods as revealed by the death of high numbers of civilians, i.e. “using the people of Gaza as human shields, firing rockets out of densely populated zones and attacking those seeking to escape or seeking assistance.”
Azar further justified the humanitarian acts of Israel by claiming that it had managed to deliver to Gaza 2 million tonnes of food supplies, but it was Hamas stealing the food in order to make people hungry. He cited 450 per cent population growth in Gaza in the past 50 years as refuting genocide allegations and cautioned,: Don’t buy Hamas numbers.
The encounter was taking place at a time when there was constant conflict in Gaza that had seen civilian deaths and the humanitarian crises raise international attention. Independently, Priyanka Gandhi spoke out against the murder of five journalists of Al Jazeera in Gaza as an act of “heinous crime” which she accused Israel of trying to commit by using “violence and hatred” to impose silence.
The political and moral differences in the Gaza war turn nasty as the diplomatic tussle begins.
