An Iranian official has said he would be willing to assist on humanitarian grounds in the case involving an Indian nurse, Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death in Yemen. Priya was found guilty of assassinating a Yemeni citizen, and her death penalty was confirmed by Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023, the execution of which had been approved by a trial court in 2020. Information reaching us also has it that Yemen’s President Rashad al-Alimi has also endorsed the execution.
”We are ready for humanitarian assistance in as much as it is possible in any fashion,” a senior Iranian official told a news agency.
Nimisha Priya is a 45-year-old housewife who is a trained nurse working in private hospitals in Yemen for several years. Her husband and young daughter went back to India in 2014, owing to a lack of funds years before the outbreak of the civil war in Yemen. Since the conflict prevented the issuance of new visas, they couldn’t return to join her.
In 2015, Priya joined hands with a Yemeni national named Talal Abdo Mahdi to open a medical clinic at Sana, which is the capital of Yemen, because the law set up in Yemen demanded Priya that no foreigner could register a clinic or business. While visiting Kerala the same year, Mahdi allegedly forged and embezzled a wedding photo of Nimisha to hold that they were wed.
According to the legal complaint filed by Priya, Mahdi bombarded her and her family with continued harassment. He was accused of trying to confine her in Yemen and economically abuse her, having used all the money from the clinic as well as all her belongings. Additionally, he reportedly pointed a gun at her, threatening her several times. He also allegedly tortured her while under drug influence.
Priya’s case has received so much attention because of the legal aspect, humanitarianism, and geopolitics that surround her situation; people are asking for assistance to help her avoid the death penalty.
