International Tiger Day is a global observance that seeks to preserve tigers’ natural habitats and raise public awareness and support for conservation efforts worldwide. The declaration to celebrate this day was made on July 29, 2010, in St. Petersburg, aiming to unite all tiger range countries in a concerted effort to enhance tiger conservation and management worldwide.
It brought together 13 tiger-range countries with the ambitious “Tx2” goal: to double the wild tiger population by 2022. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing threats these majestic big cats face, including poaching, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and climate change.
For India, International Tiger Day holds immense relevance. As of 2022, India is home to an astounding 75% of the world’s wild tiger population
Tiger Population in India
As per the numbers revealed in the 2024 Parliament session, the tiger population has increased as per the All India Tiger Estimation done in 2022, with an estimated number of 3682 (range 3167-3925) as compared to the 2018 estimation of 2967.

The contribution of tribal communities in the growth of the tiger population is commendable. One success story highlighted in th recent days comes from the jungles of Andhra Pradesh, where residents of the hills of Nallamalai have participated actively to conserve and monitor wildlife. This lead to the successful revival of tiger population to 75 in India’s largest tiger reserve. The Chenchus, the original inhabitants of Nallamalai, have been a blessing in disguise. they are one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) and are off recent primitive lifestyle. They have played a crucial role in collecting the specimens for the biolab to lay sample plots and transect data that helped to vigil the illegal activities.
With the highest tiger density in India, Bandhavgarh is basically the VIP lounge for big cat sightings. Add ancient ruins and rugged cliffs to the mix and it feels you’ve stepped into a lost kingdom. Stay in jungle-style at Mahua Kothi by Taj Safaris or Samode Safari Lodge, where you might just hear a roar over breakfast.
