Indore: Indore is currently dealing with a major outbreak of a public health problem when 142 individuals (11 in an intensive care unit) were hospitalized due to an outbreak of diarrhoea caused by contaminated drinking water. Massive screenings were done in the epicenter of the outbreak, Bhagirathpura, by health authorities where 9,416 people were screened in 2,354 homes. In this survey 20 new cases of diarrhoea were identified and this illustrates the persistence of the water contamination.

The total number of patients who have been admitted in hospitals since the outbreak started is 398, among whom 256 were discharged successfully after they were treated. Although there has been a huge amount of infections, the authorities have reported that the epidemic is now mostly contained thanks to a quick medical response and containment efforts. Regrettably, although six people are already reported dead, according to the local news, and the mayor of the city, the number of those killed might be even greater (between 10 to 16) including a six-month old baby.

In order to help contain the situation, a group of professionals at the Kolkata based National Institute of Research of Bacterial Infections (NIRBI) have come to Indore. These experts are offering technical assistance to the local health department guiding them on treatment procedures and precautions to be taken to eliminate the further transmission of the infection. The Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Madhav Prasad Haasani stressed that the containment and technical observation was continuous and the authorities were making every effort to provide security to the population.

Political outrage has also been occasioned by the outbreak. The Congress party organized bell-ringing demonstrations in Madhya Pradesh, and alleged senior minister Kailash Vijayvargiya resign after he made a controversial comment regarding the crisis, saying ghanta when questioned about it by the media. People, citizens and political analysts have been most concerned about the outbreak as well as the way the government has dealt with the health crisis.
