Amul has increased its milk variant prices by Rs 2 per litre, a day after a similar move by its competitor Mother Dairy. The new prices will be effective from Thursday, May 1, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells Amul milk products, said. With this the price for one liter Amul Taaza costs Rs. 55 in most Indian states.
On an estimate, a family of four consumes one liter of milk in a day, then a family Rs. 1650 on milk. In 2015, Amul milk prices were generally stable, with some adjustments made in response to budget proposals and market conditions. For example, Amul Gold (full-cream) cost around Rs 48 per liter in 2015, while other variants like Amul Taaza (toned) were priced lower. Additionally, Amul had hiked its condensed milk prices in response to a budget proposal affecting other milk products. This means one liter of milk consumed in a month cost Rs. 1440 in 2015.
This shows the impact of increasing milk prices in the past decade. Milk Production in 2015. In the fiscal year 2014-15, India’s milk production was approximately 146.3 million tonnes. Estimates for the calendar year 2015 indicate a production of around 154-155.49 million tonnes. Not to forget that many rural households in India are self sufficient for milk.
The Indian government has set a target to increase milk production to 300 million metric tons (MMT) within the next 5 years (from March 2025). This is a significant increase from the current production of around 239 million metric tons in early 2025. Despite this, the increase in price of a necessary commodity like milk stands unjustified.
Among Indian states, Uttar Pradesh has been the highest milk producing states, contributing to the 15% of the total milk production in 2023-24. In 2015, the average farmgate price of cow milk in India was around ₹20-₹25 per liter. While specific data for Uttar Pradesh is limited, it would likely fall within a similar range.
Fast forward to 2025, recent price hikes by major players like Mother Dairy and Amul are impacting Uttar Pradesh. Effective May 1, 2025, Mother Dairy’s full cream milk in Uttar Pradesh will cost ₹69 per liter, up from ₹68. Similarly, Amul has increased prices by ₹2 per liter across all variants. For instance, Amul Gold is now ₹67 per liter.
The new prices have come into effect from today, Thursday, May 1, in all the districts of the state, including the capital Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, and Jabalpur.
The price hike applies to Amul Standard, Amul Buffalo Milk, Amul Gold, Amul Slim n Trim, Amul Chai Mazza, Amul Taaza, and Amul Cow Milk. This move follows a similar price increase by Mother Dairy, which raised milk prices by up to Rs 2 per litre starting on Wednesday, April 30. Mother Dairy’s rates have already increased, while Amul’s rates will increase from today. After this, Sanchi can also increase the milk rates. The prices of packed milk can also increase.
It is worth noting that Amul had increased the price of milk 3 days before the Lok Sabha election results last year, when Amul Gold milk was increased by Rs 2 per liter. After this, in January 2024, the price of milk was reduced by Rs 1.
Despite the price increase, Amul is experiencing significant growth. Amul’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta, shared that the company’s turnover for FY25 is Rs 66,000 crore, and it expects to close FY26 with Rs 1 lakh crore. Additionally, Amul is forecasting double-digit growth in ice cream sales in 2025 and is expanding globally, particularly with an emphasis on protein-based products.
