New Delhi: President-elect Draupadi Murmu took oath as India’s first tribal and youngest President at the Central Hall of the Parliament. The second female president of India was administered the oath by the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana.

In her first address at the Hall of Parliament, addressing the joint sitting of Former president Ram Nath Kovind, outgoing Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Murmu said “My election is proof that poor in the country can have dreams and also fulfil them”.

She underscored how primary education was a dream for her and stated how she would work for the upliftment of the marginalized sector in this field. She further appealed the nations youth to work for thr future of the country alongside with theirs.

Prior to taking oath, Murmu visited the Gandhi statue and paid respects to the great leader. She also met outgoing Pres ahead of the oath taking ceremony.

Murmu, is the 15th president of India, but the first tribal and the second female to take charge of the post. She was also the first woman to be sworn in as Jharkhand Governor in 2015. A two-time BJP MLA from Odisha, she was a minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet when the Biju Janata Dal or BJD ruled the state with BJP’s support. In her diverse experience of administration, Murmu has utmost knowledge of ministries such as transport, commerce, fisheries and animal husbandry that she led in the Odisha government.
