Rajasthan: India reported its first Omicron death in Udaipur, Rajasthan. A 73-year-old man identified as Laxminarayan Nagar reportedly tested positive for the virus on December 15 and was hospitalized since then. Doctors treating the infected individual claim the deceased presented co-morbidities and was double vaccinated and had no travel history or significant contact.
Samples sent for genome sequencing yielded the patient is a carrier of the Omicron variant. Though he tested negative on December 21, the affected individual lost the battle six days later in the afternoon.
So far, 2,135 cases of Omicron have been reported from India. According to the information shared by the Ministry of Health, 24 states have reported detection of Omicron. As per the statistics given by MoHFW, India’s active COVID tally stood at 21,4004 accounting for 0.61%. Out of the total Omicron cases, Maharashtra has reported the highest count while the national capital Delhi has accounted for 464 cases.
Earlier today, the health ministry quoted a single-day rise of 58,097 COVID cases and 534 deaths in the past 24 hours. Cumulatively, the health ministry has vaccinated 147.08 crore beneficiaries under the nationwide vaccination drive.
