New Delhi: India recorded 2,82,970 fresh infections in the past 24 hours standing as the highest count in 248 days. The recovery rate at 93.88 per cent accounted for 1,88,157 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,55,83,039. The daily positivity rate stood at 15.13 per cent.

The number of active cases stood at 18,31,000 accounting for 4.83 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported a rise of 94,372 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.29 per cent reported a spike in deaths recording 441 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,87,202.

Amongst the major cities, Karnataka reported 41,457 new cases, Maharashtra logged 39,207 infections , Kerala recorded 28,481 in the past 24 hours. Omicron variant cases tally rose to 8,961 the Union Health Ministry said today morning.

Mucormycosis, the black fungal infection that worsened the impact of the Delta wave in India, resurfaced days ago in the financial capital of the country. A 70-year-old admitted to a south Mumbai hospital with Covid on January 12 developed mucor mycosis on the third day and needed an elaborate debridement (removal of affected tissues) surgery on cheeks and around the eyes.

The health bulletin documented 158.88 crore cumulative vaccinations under the nationwide vaccination drive, including 76.35 lakh administrations in the past 24 hours.
