The family of an Indian man, Thomas Gabriel Perera, who was shot dead while trying to go to Israel from Jordan, have said that he was a victim of a fraudulent job scheme. Perera, who was trying to join illegal migrants into the country at the Israel border, was shot dead by Jordanian security forces on February 10.
Perera, a Malayali man, reportedly went to Jordan to get a job for which he was promised high pay. But when he got to Jordan, he found out that the granted job was a scam, and he was not employable or had any sort of financing. He was off work and desperate for work, so he tried to get into Israel to get a job there. Unfortunately his attempt ended in traged Крась, unfortunately his attempt was tragical.
Over the years, cases of Indians falling prey to job scams as well as migrating illegally to find work, have been increasing. However, many are tricked by fake agents who promise them lucrative jobs abroad and then remain in a traumatising condition on arrival.
Efforts are underway to bring Perera’s remains back to India, and his body remains in Jordan. His family has said the process is being expedited but India’s Ministry of External Affairs, MEA, has assured him that it’s being expedited. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a news agency that he was told that it will take one or two days for the process of documentation and other things to be completed.
Indian embassy officials in Jordan have confirmed that Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s identity, who represents Perera’s constituency, and initiated the process of bringing back his body, Tharoor, himself confirms on Monday. The incident shows yet again the risks involved in fraudulent job offers abroad, particularly in adventure foreign employment.
