Dhaka: The Indian government summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah on Wednesday. This step was taken following a recent threat received by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The Indian government has not yet clarified the nature of the threat or where it originated, but it is being viewed as a serious security concern.
The Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka was also closed from 2 pm on Wednesday. An organization called ‘July Oikya (July Unity)’ had announced a march towards the Indian High Commission today. Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP) leader, Hasnat Abdullah has threatened India. Addressing a gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, he said that Bangladesh could harbor anti-India and separatist forces.
About a kilometer before the Indian High Commission, police erected barricades, preventing protesters from advancing. The protesters then attempted to break through the barricades, but faced a tighter police blockade. Without naming India, he said, “If you are giving shelter to those who destabilize us, we will also give shelter to the separatists of the Seven Sisters.” In his speech, Hasnat Abdullah stated that Bangladesh will support anti-India forces if necessary.
Hasnat Abdullah said that by giving shelter to such organizations, the states of India’s Northeast could be separated from the mainland. The statement drew applause from the crowd. The statement is considered extremely sensitive for India-Bangladesh relations. The Seven Sisters include the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
