India and the United States have officially signed an MoU to step up cooperation between the two nations in fighting cybercrime. It came into signing on Friday in Washington; the deal may help ameliorate the two countries’ attempts at dealing with cybercrime investigation since it allows for improved cooperation between the agencies of both countries as well as reciprocate cooperation in training.
The MoU was inked between India’s Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Vinay Kwatra and Ms. Kristie Canegallo, the Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Investigations for the United States of America. As stated by the Ministry of External Affairs in India, this is also a strategic move to achieve cooperation in repelling the data threat in cybercrime. Through the MoU, Indian and US agencies will be better placed to share intelligence on breaking cyber threats, which are important tools that are used in investigations.
According to the terms of this MoU, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs of India, will be responsible for executing the MoU on their side. The US agencies involved in this include the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement ((ICE), and the Cyber Crisis Center (C3) of the agency of Homeland Security Investigation (HSI).
The cooperation between India and the US is meant to enhance their capacity to address cybercrimes with international dimensions. The MoU also seeks to develop means for improving the experience of training law enforcement officers in the two countries on the techniques and tools that are essential for combatting cybercrime. It is also testified by this cooperation, which characterizes the progressive acknowledgement of the global scale of the dangers connected with cyberspace and the consequent necessity of an international approach to these problems.
