On Wednesday, India called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to implement a pragmatic engagement approach with the Taliban, unless they continue using punitive action which, as per the country, has not been effective over the last four and a half years; rather, they continued to pursue the ineffective business as usual approach. In the UNSC meeting on Afghanistan situation, the Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, India emphasized the need to have a balanced incentive based framework which will entice the Taliban to make constructive action.

Harish observed that India is serious with the development requirements of the Afghanistan people. He noted the recent move by New Delhi to reinstate its technical mission in Kabul into a full-fledged embassy and said this was a great show of India long-term dedication towards stabilising, and humanitarian and development of Afghanistan.

He said that India will continue to liaise with all its stakeholders to enhance its assistance in the spheres of humanitarian aid, capacity building, and infrastructural growth, always with the goals of the Afghan citizens in mind.

During the conference, India was also in agreement of the issues of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) that touched on the recent airstrikes by Pakistan on the territory of Afghanistan. In these attacks, Harish cursed house-down in no uncertain words the murders of innocent women, children and even the local cricketers. According to him, such events do not only pose a threat to the lives of civilians but also worsen the already weak security and humanitarian environment in Afghanistan.

Harish also added that India was deeply concerned about what he termed as trade and transit terrorism whereby Pakistan had demonstrated through repeated blockage of access routes to a landlocked country such as Afghanistan. He said that such one-sided limitations are crippling the lives of Afghans and aggravate the plight of a people who are already suffering decades of economic stagnation and civil war.
