India reiterated on Wednesday that its citizens should not travel to Iran because of the current regional tensions. The advice arises due to the new developments in security affairs, especially the heated aggression between Iran and Israel last month. Although the situation has since calmed down with a call for a ceasefire, the Indian authorities remain alarmed and have called upon their citizens to keep a close watch on the unfolding issue in the region.

The Tehran-based Indian Embassy issued the advisory on its social media accounts, saying, in the wake of the recent events that have happened over the last few weeks, Indian nationals are encouraged to weigh the changing events with careful consideration before putting their foot forward to Iranian soil to travel to the country in case of non-essential travel. The embassy also suggested that the citizens who are currently in Iran be vigilant, to monitor the latest advisories issued by the Indian government and evaluate possibilities of leaving to arrive in India by means of using options that are at their disposal.

The warning is after the safe repatriation of 3,597 Indian nationals in June in Iran. These people were students as well as professionals, pilgrims, fishers, and laborers. It took a special flight between June 18 and 26, airlifting them through 15 special flights organised by the Indian government. The evacuations took place in the Iranian city of Mashhad and on connecting routes via the Armenian cities of Yerevan and Ashgabat in Turkmenistan.

Indian nationals were estimated to be approximately 10,000 in Iran, and most of them were students when tensions flared up last month. The Indian government was in close coordination with local authorities and airlines to ensure that its citizens are evacuated and, above all, their safety is ensured at a time when it is extremely volatile.

Although the ceasefire between Iran and Israel has brought relief, the Indian government has insisted on being cautious. It is also highly recommended that citizens do not make any unnecessary journeys in Iran in the meantime and should stay in contact with the Indian embassy in case they are in need of any kind of help and similar information.
