With rising tensions and war between Iran and Israel, there is a tense situation going on, and to control this situation, the Indian government has initiated Operation Sindhu to evacuate its valuable people in the war-stricken Iran. Speaking in a major breakthrough, the Indian Embassy in Iran revealed that due to the requests shown by the governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the evacuation process will now be open to citizens of those two nations as well.
In a post through a social media platform, called X; the Indian Embassy in Iran had said, “On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy’s evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) affirmed that 517 Indian nationals have been brought back safely to the country in the framework of Operation Sindhu until the date. Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson of MEA, has also given an update that a special aircraft evacuating Indian nationals in Iran arrived in New Delhi at 3 AM on June 21, via Ashgabat in Turkmenistan.
The evacuation was prompted by the fact that Iran and Israel had exchanged hostilities that were on day nine on Saturday. The war broke out on June 13, as Israel staged a colossal air attack on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructures, which was also called Operation Rising Lion. In revenge, Iran launched Operation True Promise 3, sending out drones and missiles to the Israeli energy system, oil production, and refineries.
India has not been the first time that it has intervened to evacuate civilians in an international crisis. During recent years, India has made various such operations: Operation Kaveri (Sudan, 2023), Operation Ajay (Israel-Hamas war, 2023), Operation Ganga (Ukraine, 2022), Operation Devi Shakti (Afghanistan, 2021), and Operation Samudra Setu (COVID-19, 2020).
The second point that needs to be made is that the rapid humanitarian response may remind everyone that not only did India have a close relationship with the people of Bangladesh in terms of the recent devastation, but they were also willing to lend a helping hand once the situation escalated.
