Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner, Nural Islam, was recently called into a meeting with Indian officials on Monday, as per a news agency. This decision was made a day after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned India High Commissioner for Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, in Dhaka.
The summoning came after tension escalations on activities close to the Bangladesh-India border. The Bangladeshi foreign ministry also formally conveyed an official diplomatic concern over the recent activities of India’s Border Security Force (BSF). These concerns were discussed with the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma during Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin’s courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday. The ministry pointed to the possible incidents across the border and called on India to adequately respond to them in order to preserve mutually viable relations.
In response, the High Commissioner of India, Pranay Verma, pointed out that his country remains fully committed to a border-free from criminal activities. Speaking to reporters, he said, “I met the Foreign Secretary to deliberate on India’s commitment towards curbing cross-border crimes of smuggling, movement of criminals and trafficking. We also examined possibilities for the publics of both countries to better understand each other regarding the construction of fencing and other measures of security.”
Verma further went on to discuss the continued interaction between the two nation’s border guards. “Currently, the BSF and the BGB have a regular dialogue towards arriving at a better common strategy for tackling problems in the border,” he said.
From the discussions, it can be seen that there is a need for a good bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh, especially in terms of border security. It borders both nations, and the two, over the years have tried to cooperate in dealing with security and trade issues. Such recent interactions depict their willingness to address issues through diplomacy and compounding their sturdiness in the region’s security.
