Agni-5 Testing: India has successfully tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile Agni-5. It was tested on Wednesday at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. It is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. That is, it can be launched on multiple targets simultaneously. Its first test was done in April 2012. It was developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It is one of the long-range missiles that India has. It is the most advanced missile of the Agni series.
The range of Agni-V is more than 5000 kilometers. It flies at a speed 24 times faster than the speed of sound. The whole of China comes within its range, while many parts of Europe and Africa are also within its range. The missile will be able to carry a 7500 kg bunker buster warhead and go to a depth of 100 meters in the ground and destroy the enemy’s nuclear system, radar system, control center, weapon storage.
This is the country’s first and only surface-to-surface intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Agni-V has a range of over 5,000 kilometers. Its range includes the whole of China, while many parts of Europe and Africa are also within its range. This missile is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV) technology. This means that once it is launched, it can attack multiple targets simultaneously. Agni-5 can carry up to one and a half tons of nuclear weapons. Agni 5 is a major achievement in the field of missile technology. The entire technology, propulsion system, rocket, and advanced navigation of this missile is 100 percent indigenous.
Its speed is Mach 24, which is 24 times the speed of sound. The launching system of this missile is based on canister technology. This is why it can be easily transported anywhere. At present, apart from India, only eight countries in the world have Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM). These include Russia, America, China, France, Israel, Britain, and North Korea.
DRDO has started preparations to make a new non-nuclear version of Agni-5 missile. This missile is being made especially for the Air Force. It will have a heavy warhead of about 8 tonnes. It can be used in two ways.
