India strongly condemned on Saturday the killing of the prominent leader of the Hindu community in Bangladesh, Bhabesh Chandra Roy, as well as the feeling of concern over the safety and rights of the Hindu minorities in that country.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a statement on X (previously Twitter), said: “We have taken note of the abduction and brutal killing of Hindu minority leader Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy in Bangladesh. The pattern of systematic persecution of the Hindu minority in the interim government continues, even as the perpetrators of the previous such killings run free,” it added.
Jaiswal further requested the Bangladeshi authorities to fulfil their responsibility of keeping all communities safe. “We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions,” he added.
The Dinajpur district of northern Bangladesh is reported to have abducted Bhabesh Chandra Roy, aged 58, from his residence. Roy was reportedly called on the day of his disappearance around 4:30 p.m., local media reports said, as cited by a news agency. Shantana Roy, his widow, said the call was from people who were apparently involved in the crime, as if they wanted to verify his presence at home.
They supposedly called Roy around 30 minutes after the call, before four men, on two motorcycles, reportedly took Roy away. He was beaten to death, and they took him to Narabari village. That night, he was found dead, later reported by a news agency with quotes from police and family members.
The incident has also drawn attention to the plight of religious minorities in Bangladesh and is only the latest alarm regarding the safety of that country’s persecuted people.
