The Indian government on Wednesday countered a report in the UK press that claimed that the wrong body belonging to a deceased was delivered to the family of a British passenger who lost his life in the deadly Air India plane accident flying to London. The case has stirred up feelings of agony among the families that have lost loved ones as they have called out the government to provide a comprehensive explanation of the guilt of the alleged flouting of whatever was left of the mortal remains.

Commenting on the issue, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed that India was already in close contact with UK authorities ever since the issue was brought up about the wrong body. “We have read the report as well, and we have also been in the past working with the UK side since the time these issues and concerns were raised to our notice,” Jaiswal said. He guaranteed that they identified the victims according to the laid-down international standards and technical necessities. He added: all mortal remains were also treated most professionally and with due respect to the dignity of the deceased, to which utmost action is still being taken to address the grievances.

The report shows that a funeral of a British victim had to be ended after it became known that the coffin had the remains of another person. In the other gross misconduct, two bodies were said to be put in one coffin, or as they call it, commingling the remains, and they had to separate them before sending off.

As expressed by a solicitor, James Healy-Pratt, representing various British families affected by the crash, the situation is described as heartbreaking and distraught, and thus there should be closure. He pointed out that the foremost thing that is desired by these families is the retrieval of their loved ones, but not all of them have received the right remains.

The exposures have strengthened the need for openness and accountability in how remains are handled, and families have pressed the two governments to be more prompt in giving clarity on the issue and dignity in how remains can be repatriated.
