A 25-year-old female nurse has died from Nipah virus infection in Bengal, marking the state’s first recent death. The nurse was one of two Nipah cases reported in January 2026. Both nursing staff were admitted to a private hospital in Barasat; the male nurse recovered, while the female nurse remained in critical condition and has now died.

Both infected nursing staff were admitted to a private hospital in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district. They included a male nurse and a female nurse. The male nurse recovered completely after treatment and was discharged from the hospital in January. However, the female nurse’s condition remained critical. She was kept in intensive care (ICU) for several days and later, when her condition worsened, she was shifted to the CCU. A team of doctors continued to monitor her.

Although the female nurse’s Nipah test later came back negative, her condition did not improve. Her condition became so complicated that she was placed on ventilator support. According to hospital authorities, she suffered a cardiac arrest during treatment and died around 4 pm.
