India has vehemently objected to a security breach of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his official visit to the United Kingdom on Thursday. The issue has made the Indian government extremely displeased, which expressed concern about the matter.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned such provocative actions of the extremist group. “We have seen the footage of the security breach during EAM’s UK visit.” The statement read, “We condemn strongly the activities of these small group of separatists and extremists.”

This happened on Wednesday evening, as Jaishankar was leaving Chatham House in London after a scheduled conversation. A pro-Khalistan protester rushed toward his vehicle as his convoy started to leave, cynically using a small window that security personnel appeared unsure of in that moment. In a shocking defiance, the protester ripped the Indian tricolour by his associates who chanted pro-Khalistan slogans.

Such actions are based on the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements and they go against the principles of peaceful discourse and diplomacy, the MEA said. “We condemn such elements abusing democratic liberties.” The statement also added that we expect the host government to uphold their diplomatic obligations fully.

The extremists were quickly made to leave the scene by London police. In an incident that has sparked concerns of a lack of safety measures in the hiring of professional bodyguards, and also about the security of S Jaishankar, the foreign secretary. India has asked the UK government to take strict action to avoid such incidents in the days to come.
