India reacted to the death sentence passed on a former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina by the tribunal by reaffirming its interest in the welfare and stability of Bangladesh on Monday. A tribunal court in Dhaka made the verdict, which charges Hasina with crimes against humanity in relation to the violent crackdown on student protesters last year, which eventually led her government to lose power.
Since her overthrow, Hasina had since been living in India since then taking refuge there. The events have attracted global interest, as the impact on the political life of Bangladesh that she had had throughout decades, and the long history, culture and economic connection between the two neighbouring countries.
India did not comment directly on the judicial process but in its official statement, it repeated its long-standing policy of endorsing peace and democratic principles in Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India is still dedicated to the overall interest of the people of Bangladesh, even in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in the Bangladesh state. The reaction emphasized the delicate diplomatic juggernaut practiced by India to recognize the seriousness of the issue without intervening in the domestic affairs of Bangladesh.
According to analysts, the response of the New Delhi has both strategic and humanitarian implications. One of the closest Indian partners in South Asia is Bangladesh with which it cooperates in the fields of trade, security, connectivity and counterterrorism. The political turmoil in Dhaka, thus, has direct consequences on the stability in the region.
The verdict of the tribunal and the political crisis as a whole still split the society in Bangladesh, with the opinion of those who believe that the tribunal should be held to account and those who believe that the verdict may have been unjust and untimely. With uncertainty looming, India will be keen on the developments, but at the same time, it will remain focused on the stability and democratic ambitions of the Bangladeshi people as it has been doing.
