India called a representative from the Canadian High Commission on Saturday asserting a protest to recent remarks made by Canadian officials over Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As stated by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, a diplomatic note was placed in relation to talks held in the Standing Committee, Public Safety and National Security in Canada on October 29, 2024.
“The representative of the Canadian High Commission was summoned yesterday, and a demarche was made to him,” Jaiswal added. “Before the committee, Deputy Minister David Morrison made baseless and ridiculous comments on the India Union Home Minister.” He noted that “such irresponsible actions” may have serious implications for bilateral relations, according to Jaiswal.
This protest came in the wake of reports by a news agency that Canada accused Amit Shah of plotting to attack Sikh separatists In Canada during a parliamentary session with Canada’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison, who reportedly disclosed to The Washington Post that Shah plotted these schemes.
They have further fueled existing strains in the relations between the two nations, that is, India and Canada. In June, it was claimed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the Indian government agents were involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar a Khalistan activist in Canada. India had its High Commissioner in Ottawa, Sanjay Verma, withdrawn last month after Canada described him as a ‘person of interest’ in the Nijjar case. Worst still, New Delhi revoked Verma’s accreditation and expelled six Canadian diplomats.
At the same time, the United States has stepped up to the plate to address the advancements and ask questions about them. “The specific allegations made by the government of Canada are troubling, and we will keep discussing that matter with the Canadian government,” an official of the U.S. State Department, Matthew Miller, said. The U.S. reaction underscores a growing global focus on the rivalry between the two democracies, which is now kindled by accusations.
