To safeguard against terrorism and deal with land disputes with its neighbours, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has on Monday said that India needs to be ready to fight both high intensity conflicts in short durations and long-term wars. In an address at the Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the CDS highlighted how the threats to the country were evolving and that there was a need to have a wholesome military preparedness.
When Gen Chauhan was talking about the possible enemies, he did not mention the names of Pakistan and China directly, but it was clear that India has a land conflict problem with two of its neighbours, one of which is a known nuclear-armed country and another is a known nuclear weapon state. The nature of threats and challenges that India must be ready to face has to be founded on two realities. The two of them are all classified under nuclear and thus we need to make sure that we do not in any way jeopardize the deterring level.
Gen Chauhan stressed that the security policy that India adopts should take into consideration a vast range of conflicts. The conflicts needed to counter terrorist activities as well as limited provocations are short and intense, whereas the long-lasting ones can be caused by the failure to resolve territorial issues. He emphasized the necessity of being prepared on both ends of the spectrum so as not to jeopardize national interests.
The CDS also talked extensively about the evolving nature of modern warfare saying that the world is close to a third revolution in military affairs. The idea of this stage he referred to as convergence warfare, which was caused by the concurrent application of various advanced technologies. He argues that new technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, edge computing, hypersonic weapons, advanced materials and robotics are dramatically changing the way wars are being fought as opposed to the past times where technological impact was not as heightened.
