New Delhi: India recorded 18,930 fresh infections in the past 24 hours. The recovery rate at 98.52 per cent accounted for 14,650 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 4,29,21,977. The daily positivity rate stood at 4.32 per cent.

The number of active cases stood at 1,19,457 accounting for 0.27 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported an increase of 4,245 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate stood at 1.21 per cent recorded 35 fatalities taking the cumulative death toll to 5,25,305.

With the administration of 11.44 lakh vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 198.33 crore according to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

A new sub-lineage BA.2.75 of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has been detected in countries like India and the World Health Organisation is following this, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.”On COVID-19, globally reported cases have increased nearly 30 per cent over the past two weeks. Four out of six of the WHO sub-regions saw cases increase in the last week,” Mr Ghebreyesus said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

On the emergence of the potential Omicron sub-variant BA.2.75, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said in a video posted on Twitter that there has been an emergence of a sub-variant that is being called the BA.2.75 “first reported from India and then from about 10 other countries.”
