After India and Italy announced the new JSAP for 2025-29, both countries hope to collaborate on several important spheres encompassing connectivity, defence, trade, AI and clean energy etc.
The plan, which was unveiled after a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held on the sideline of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, mainly aims to enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries.
One of the major elements of the new action plan is the increased cooperation on the maritime infrastructure that will underpin the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor envisaged by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The plan calls for greater investment in sustainable transport and environment between the two countries. Furthermore, the plan aims to create cooperation in both the maritime and land infrastructure sectors.
On the defence front, the two nations intend to discuss the defence industrial wishlist, that is, the defence industrial MoU, which would outline a roadmap for India’s defence manufacturers and aerospace, defence, and security industries in Italy. The foreign policy agreement is expected to strengthen defence partnership as both countries will collaborate in research, development and production of defence-related equipment.
The present Prime Minister of India Modi, also emphasized forging strong relations of defence, security, trade, and technology between both countries, meaning between India and Italy. He also spoke of the prospect of cultural, educational and social relationships between these two nations. In her statement, Prime Minister Meloni stressed that the action plan remains a renewed and significant understanding between both nations and a high endeavour for the strategic partnership. The plan is deemed a major move toward building enhanced cooperation in areas of importance, including cleantech, sustainable living, and democracy.
From this perspective, this deepened cooperation may benefit not only the economic growth of both countries but also the stability of the whole region and the world as the given states aim to support the supremacy of law and democratic principles.
