On Monday, as part of its own anti-terror diplomatic initiative, Pakistan sent top-level envoys to the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Russia. After India carried out ‘Operation Sindoor’ following the Pahalgam attack in April, killing 26 civilians, the initiative was designed to block attacks on Pakistan.
India had viewed Pakistan’s suspected role in assisting cross-border terrorism earlier and had sent seven multi-party teams from India to speak to world leaders. To this, Pakistan’s Foreign Office declared it will focus on explaining Pakistan’s views on the Indian action and underline the significance of negotiation instead of force.
The leading Pakistani team, headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party, brings senior politicians and former ambassadors Hina Rabbani Khar, Khurram Dastgir Khan, Musadik Malik, Sherry Rehman and Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari. Their trip includes New York, Washington DC, London and Brussels, from June 2, at which point they will have discussions with people in government, multinational organisations, legislators, research centres, news outlets and groups of expatriates.
A delegation under the leadership of Prime Minister Sharif’s special assistant Syed Tariq Fatemi will fly to Moscow, though its full makeup has not yet been made known.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, it is looking to win support abroad, reduce tensions and restart mechanisms such as the Indus Waters Treaty that have been stopped with the rise in tensions. It encouraged diplomacy to take priority over warlike actions and hoped that world stakeholders would be cautious in responding to the military exchanges and help seek peace in the region.
