India Exports the First Consignment of Covishield Vaccines to Bhutan, a Total of 1,50,000 Doses

Bhutan imported the first consignment of Covishield vaccines from India on Wednesday, just 4-days after India’s large inoculation drive kicked off, becoming the first country to receive vaccines from India.

In the first consignment, the country received a total of 1,50,000 doses of the vaccine, which was delivered to them by an Indian Air Force craft named AN32, and was received by Prime Minister Dr. Lotay Tshering, accompanied by Dechen Wangmo (Health Minister), Kinga Singye (Foreign Secretary), and some senior officials. Reportedly, the leaders of Bhutan received the consignment from Indian Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj at Paro International Airport. 

After receiving the Serum Institute of India-made Covishield vaccines, Bhutan PM Lotay remarked that he takes it as a gift from a trusted friend, having been in support of the country over the decades, and even during the worldwide pandemic.

The PM stated – “As we celebrate the arrival of the vaccine as the new milestone in our battle to beat the pandemic at home, we applaud the gesture that signifies the compassion and generosity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for the wellbeing of humanity”.

He further added – “It is the display of altruism at best, and an exhibition of India’s sincerity in the relationship we cherish”. He also mentioned that India stretched its hand towards them despite having several issues due to the pandemic. 

According to a press release – “The dispatch of the vaccine was the testimony to India’s commitment of ‘neighborhood first’ and its leadership in the global fight against COVID-19”.
