On Wednesday, India managed to evacuate 75 Indian nationals, 44 of them being pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir, out of Syria after rebels captured Damascus recently. Owing to the evaluation of the violence risks in Syria, the Indian embarkations in both Damascus and Beirut oversaw the evacuation plan. The evacuees, who were stuck in the war-torn country, have reached the Lebanese territory and are expected to fly back to India on commercial flights, The Ministry of External Affairs said.
Among those who were evacuated were 44 “zaireen” or pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir, who were stranded at Sayyidah Zaynab, a vital shrine of Shia Islam. The pilgrims had come to the site for faith cures, but they ended up in the middle of the conflict. The Indian government did not waste any time when it came to the safety of its nationals across the world and intervened to bring them home safely.
The Ministry of External Affairs appealed to Indian nationals still in Syria to remain connected with the Indian embassy in Damascus so that they could be informed and assisted. The embassy has given a phone number (+963 993385973) and email ([email protected]) to aid the people in times of emergency.
The evacuation is due to the emergence of a political crisis and the overthrow of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Many people, together with international partners, have expressed their desire for the stability of Syria and have urged the protection of the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of that nation. The Indian government has said it will closely watch the developments of the situation and ensure the safety of its citizens.
