New Delhi: In India, the moon for the ninth month of the ‘Hijri calendar was sighted on Tuesday night. Thus, the month of Ramadan, also called Ramzan begins from Wednesday. Millions of Muslims in India and from all over the world mark this as the holiest month of all as they fast from dawn to dusk without even drinking water. For the past few years, Ramadan falls during the summer season which makes it difficult for many to observe the fast for the long days but this does not dampen their spirit.

Like last year, this year too, the month of Ramadan begins amidst the pandemic. The second wave of the deadly virus is sure to make a difference in the way people celebrate this month and Eid-Ul-Fitr that follows soon after the end of Ramadan.

While the fast in different states begins at almost 3.30-4 AM (suhoor), the breaking of the fast (Iftaar) starts from 5.45 and extends till 7 PM depending upon the time of setting of the sun in the designated places. People are advised to observe fast, pray Taraweeh (evening prayer), donate zakat, and serve the needy in this holy month.

The PM of India Narendra Modi Ji took to his Twitter account to wish the country people on the eve of Ramadan. In his post, he wrote, “Best wishes for the holy month of Ramzan” along with a picture duly signed by him that states Ramadan greetings written in both Urdu and English. Other celebs also took to their respective social media handles to wish people across the world as Ramzan begins.
