India effectively tests new version of nuclear-capable ‘Shaurya Missile’

In the midst of the continuous border dispute with China, India effectively tested its indigenously developed nuclear capable hypersonic Shaurya missile with a strike range of around 1,000 km from a test range in Odisha on Saturday, defence sources said.

“The new form of the missile will be enlisted in the key powers to supplement one of the current rockets in a similar class”, top government sources told the media agency.

The missile would be lighter and simpler to work in comparison with the current rocket and can strike targets at around 800 kms. In the last stage while moving near its target, the missile moves at hypersonic speeds.

This comes only days after India successfully tested an indigenously evolved laser-guided enemy of tank guided rocket in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar on Tuesday. It was the second such effective test terminating of the rocket over the most recent 10 days. The rocket has a scope of up to 5 kms.

The missile was terminated from a MBT Arjun Tank at KK Ranges in Armored Corps Center and School (ACC&S) in Ahmednagar. 

The ATGM utilizes a pair heat warhead to defeat explosive reactive armour (ERA) protected armoured vehicles in ranges from 1.5-5 km, the Defense Ministry said in an announcement.
