In a landmark moment for India’s energy independence, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced the commencement of “first oil” production from a deep-sea project located 30 kilometers off the coast of Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada. This historic achievement, marking India’s first crude find in the Krishna Godavari Deep-Water Block 98/2, promises to significantly boost the nation’s domestic oil production and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
“Yesterday,” Minister Puri declared on Monday, “the first oil was extracted.” This extraction marks the culmination of years of dedicated effort by state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), who first began work on the project in 2016-17. While initial plans encountered delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Puri expressed optimism for the project’s future, highlighting that four of the 26 wells are already operational and set to ramp up production.
With an expected peak production of 45,000 barrels per day by May-June 2024, this project represents a significant step towards reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil, currently accounting for over 80% of the nation’s consumption. By boosting domestic production, the Krishna Godavari project holds the potential to improve energy security, lessen India’s vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations, and stimulate economic growth in Andhra Pradesh and beyond.
